Day in the Life of an Art Therapist


Hello friends today I’ll show you a day
in my life as an art therapist and content creator. I live in Austin, TX with my sister and my cat Soboru. I usually I wake up at 6 a.m. and if you have noticed I
sleep in a hammock instead of a mattress. I like to have a minimal lifestyle and
find that the hammock is much more comfortable for my back. The first thing
that I do in the morning is meditation. I like to use the app Insight Timer to
find a guided meditation or I just simply use a timer. Meditation helps me start off the day
with a calm and centered mind. After meditation I like to do some yoga to
stretch and wake up my body. Sometimes my cat likes to join. I also
usually head out and do a morning walk about an hour or so but this day I didn’t. I do love walking because it clears my mind and I feel so refreshed. With
yoga I like to do just what feels good for me and sometimes I like to watch
videos like Adrienne’s yoga videos to have more structure. I enjoy having an easy breakfast so I like having fruit smoothies. I start getting ready to do some art therapy sessions and head out. So I work as a freelance art therapist providing art therapy services through different
organizations and I also see clients online and offline for individual art
sessions. Today I have art therapy sessions at an organization. I have
already planned these sessions so I just get ready and leave. After the sessions I come back home.
I’ve done lots of different work in the past like case management and full-time
art therapist work but I find that I love doing freelance art therapy work
and having that flexibility to also work online and share about art therapy on
YouTube. And today I cook a Korean meal “Boochoojeon” and enjoy my time with my sister. it has been a long time since we cooked
this kind of Korean meal so we really liked how it came out today. I like to do my notes for the art
therapy sessions that I’ve held on the same day so I don’t get bogged down with
all the notes that I have to do later on. After the notes I am just preparing
myself to have some time to work on my YouTube and content creation. I’ve been
enjoying this dandelion tea since I don’t like coffee because of the
caffeine and this tastes very similar and it tastes really good. So today I worked on a little bit of
brainstorming for my podcast as well as my videos. I also followed up with
comments on my YouTube channel. I haven’t been so active with my podcast
lately and I’m actually working on getting back to the game and having
episodes every other week, so if you haven’t listened to my podcast make sure
to check it out – the link is in the description. It’s on all the big podcast
apps like Apple podcast and Stitcher. After that I took a little bit of a
break and practiced ukulele. This is something that I picked up recently and
I just started it. I’m just practicing some basic chords I learned from YouTube. After all the work with art therapy and
with YouTube it’s just really nice to have some screen free time for myself
and I really love just hanging out with my cat. And today I go for my new journal that I
received from Arteza. They were really kind enough to send these to me for free.
I received a set of color pencils, a multimedia pad, and a set of markers. And they also gave me a discount code to share with you, my viewers if you would
like to get some supplies from them as well. I like to make art that reflects
how the day went for me and how I feel as a way to check in with myself and
release anything that I need to express. And I like to use a mandala or a circle
form to contain whatever it is that I want to express. Since Subaru interrupted my art time I
just took that moment to pet her and this is what my artwork looked like
at the end. In the evening I like to start winding
down with some reading. I’ve been reading A Course in Miracles
for a long time and I really like to just go back to certain sections and
remind myself some of the spiritual lessons in the book. So that’s how I end

  6. Awsome video… The way you meditated first and then did yoga stretches and had a smoothy for breakfast and spent time with your sister and Beautiful cat and shared food with your sister. I loved your artwork the way you do the circle like I do circles with my watercolour artwork inside I feel guided by circles and I draw a square and do artwork in the square because it's a guiding tool…. I have cancer for the third time so I'm not working and having chemotherapy please pray for me 🐾🐾🐾🐾

I was very inspired and have started to incorporate some of these minimalist techniques and have noticed a drop in my anxiety & need to please. Donated almost all my clothes that were stuffed in my closet for years. Felt so good – the purging of things that I no longer have any use for. It helps me focus & stay calm and even more powerful when I meditate. Thanks so much for sharing!!!!

  14. Thanks for this wonderful insight in to your day. Your daily routine is very productive and yet still calm and peaceful. I really love that. I have been working for 15 years in the fashion industry after studying design and I am thinking of changing to art therapy and illustration. Is there any way to try out art therapy to see if it is a good fit or even if I am suited to it. This is something I have often considered for many years and I like to try before I commit to the fees, study and the journey of turning it in to a freelance job. Do you have any advice on this. Thanks again for your beautiful video, although I will miss the art therapy exercise this week.

  17. Im really struggling getting rid of my whole stuff.. I absolutely want to be much more minimalistic (i declutter since oktober 2017), and im not happy yet. But somehow I cant overcome this problem. To watch your and your sisters videos helps me a lot to see, how I want to live relating to phyical Items in my life. 🙂

  23. Hi I‘m from Germany and after suffering from a severe depression and burnout due to my job as a biologist and a lab for about 10 years, I decided to change my life completely. I begun working in an institution for severely disabled people, some from birth and others having accidents or strokes which damaged their brains. I think this job is so fulfilling, I feel valued by my clients and find so much meaning in my work. Simultaneously I study social work (B.A.) to improve in this work. To overcome my depression I started to follow Jon Kabat-Zinn and his work of MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction), which is so nourishing to body and mind. I also started to make my own clothes of natural and organic fabrics like cotton, hemp and linen and cruelty free wool in winter. Making your own clothes is really satisfying as you fit the clothes to your unique body and not the other way around.

I have learnt a lot from your daily routine and I will implement some things to add some calm to my life, much needed now that I'm pregnant and with a full time job in finance.
